Ivan Glymph Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Ivan Glymph Memorial Endowed Scholarship is established to support scholarship awards for deserving students at the College of Coastal Georgia.
This scholarship is being established in memory of lvan Glymph, whose kindness and attentiveness had a profound impact on the donor’s life. In gratitude for that act of care, the scholarship will support veteran students, reflecting the honoree’s values and legacy.
Ivan Dow Glymph, of Brunswick, Georgia, died at the age of 62, of natural causes, in his home on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. He was born on February 23, 1955, in Miami, Florida, to Olin Leo Glymph Jr and Renee Dow.
Even as a child, Ivan loved airplanes and flying. He earned his private pilot license at the age of seventeen. Ivan graduated from Hollywood High School, Hollywood, FL, in 1973. In that same year, he joined the US Navy and served as an aviation electronics technician through various deployments, including Okinawa, Cubi Point, and Guam, until 1977. While in the Navy, he was commended for outstanding technical expertise, professionalism, and devotion to duty. Ivan also served in the US Naval Reserve from 1977 to 1979.
Ivan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Fitness from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, in April 1995. He managed the CommuniCare Wellness Center at TaUahassee Community Hospital and the Executive Fitness Program of Tallahassee Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy. He graduated as a Massage Therapist from The CORE Institute, Tallahassee, FL, and was certified by the state of Florida in 2005. As a licensed Massage Therapist, he was employed at Sea Island Resorts from 2006 – 2012, where he was well-liked by his co-workers and often had guests request him by name.
Through the years, he became interested in cycling, built and raced bicycles, completed 100-mile rides in the mountains of Dahlonega, GA, became a USCF Certified Cycling Coach, organized local time trials, and won a Florida tandem state championship title. He loved cars and was a good mechanic. He excelled at many things.
Knowing Ivan was a true joy; his quirky sense of humor, his witty repartee, and his bright intelligence made him a unique character. His love and devotion to family and friends could not be matched.
